Recently the weather in New York has been freezing cold, unbearable, and all around ugly. The winter is no longer cute once the holidays are over, and it is no longer socially acceptable to over eat mashed potatoes and cookies. Even when it is below 10 degrees outside, the city doesn’t stop hustling and bustling. Everything keeps moving forward, even if the wind hurts your face. Since we can only keep ourselves cooped up inside for so long, I thought now was the perfect time to share some of my favorite ugly weather activities. Some are centered around eating because food is delicious, but these are all great options when you can’t stand the thought of being outside for more than a few seconds, but you are also about to go stir crazy.
- Eat and shop at Chelsea Market
Chelsea Market is one of the most amazing places for a chilly or rainy day. There are tons of different places to eat, a grocery market, and lots of fun shopping. It feels like a farmers market and a mall mashed together in the middle of manhattan. Not to mention that the decorations are amazing during the holidays. Chelsea Market is home to Los Tacos #1, which has some of the best tacos in the city. Artists and Fleas is also one of my favorite stops within Chelsea Market, what can be better than supporting local artists while you stay warm and snack on mini donuts from Doughnuttery??
- Go to a comedy show
On the lower priced side of New York City shows, comedy shows are a great way to keep warm while enjoying a fun night. There are tons of comedy clubs all over the city, and if you get lucky, sometimes celebrities stop by to work on new jokes!
- Explore a new museum
New York City is famous for having some incredible museums and art galleries. I know that I’ve been to the Met about a million times, and I could lost in a new room with each visit. Some of the staple museums come out with new exhibits regularly, so no matter what you are interested in, there is always something cool to check out. If you want to work out your legs, walk up the spiral of the Guggenheim while you take in all of the art!
- Find a last minute show on StubHub
Broadway shows can get a little pricey, but if you time it right, you can get some pretty amazing deals on StubHub. The closer you get to show time, the lower the prices will go, now you just have to be careful that you aren’t late for the opening number! Also, you need to print out your ticket from StubHub to get in. Find a hotel in midtown with a business center so you can print your last minute tickets and sprint off to the theatre!
- Enjoy a meal at The Plaza Hotel
Similar to Chelsea Market, The Plaza Hotel has a smorgasbord of restaurants and dessert stops all in one place! If you are in the mood for a cup of coffee, a piece of cake, a lobster roll, or a larger bowl of ramen, The Plaza Hotel has you covered and keeps you nice and toasty. It’s also fun to see the beauty of such a historic place in the middle of the city.
No matter what part of New York floats your boat, there are always exciting adventures to be had, even in the cold.
